The International Chair of Cultural and Historical Psychology was established in 2002 as a special project of the Moscow City Psychological and Pedagogical University. Since 2012, it is a joint project of MSUPE and UNESCO and renamed into the UNESCO Chair "Cultural-Historical Psychology of Childhood".

The activities of the department are aimed at developing and expanding the theoretical and experimental base of the cultural and historical scientific school, at analyzing current trends in this area, presenting the scientific school of cultural and historical psychology in the international scientific community.

The main tasks of the department are to translate the ideas of cultural-historical psychology and the theory of activity; organization of research and development in this area; training of teachers-researchers, international experts in the field of psychological and pedagogical research of childhood problems (early, preschool and school age), having a deep theoretical and practical base, guided by traditional and modern research and development, carried out within the framework of cultural-historical psychology and activity approach.

Educational work of the chair

The department is a graduate for the master's program « Cultural-Historical Psychology and Activity-Based Approach in Education», implemented in the framework of the training area 44.04.02 Psychological and Pedagogical Education (qualification "Master", full-time study, duration of study 2 years, has been implemented since 2014).

Leading experts in the field of cultural and historical psychology from Russia, USA, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Canada take part in the program.

Leading domestic and foreign professors working in the mainstream of cultural and historical psychology participate in the educational projects of the department. Among them: A.A. Margolis, B.D. Elkonin, P.A. Sergomanov, N.N. Nechaev, V. T. Kudryavtsev, I. A. Burlakova, V.K. Zaretsky, E.I. Isaev, G. Daniels (Great Britain), S. Wegetti (Italy), N.N. Veresov (Australia), M. Dafermakis (Greece), K. Plakitsi (Greece) and others.

The chair organizes the annual International Summer University The International Society for Cultural and Activity Research (ISCAR) for graduate students and young scientists at MSUPE, which combines an intensive training program and space for informal communication and exchange of ideas with well-known domestic and foreign scientists in the field of cultural -historical psychology.

Scientific work of the chair

The research activities of the department are carried out in the field of topical problems of social practice on the basis of a cultural and historical approach. From 2012-2015, work was carried out within the framework of the international research project «Modern information environment: global prospects for the development and education of youth» («Confronting the challenges of new media: global perspectives on youth development and education») together with scientists from Germany, Greece, Great Britain, India, Brazil. A collective monograph was published based on the results of the research project.

The chair prepares materials for the international scientific journal MSUPE  «Cultural-Historical Psychology». The journal is included in the Web of Science Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and Scopus.
