September 26 and 27: the cultural-historical psychology department of MSUPE presents a course of lectures by professor N.N. Veresov entitled “The problem of development in cultural-historical psychology”.

This course discloses the problem of psychic development as it is addressed in cultural-historical concept of L.S. Vygotsky. The problem of development is regarded both in terms of the subject of cultural-historical psychology and in terms of it’s method (the experimental-genetic method).

Topic 1. Cultural-historical theory of the origin and development of the higher mental functions: general characteristics
- Main stages of creation of the cultural-historical theory.
- The problem of consciousness as a subject of psychological analysis in early works of L.S. Vygotsky.
- The problem of objective method for research of consciousness in early works of L.S. Vygotsky and in cultural-historical theory.
Topic 2. Conceptual scheme and main principals of cultural-historical psychology
- The concept of higher mental function.
- The concept of development of higher mental functions of a person.
- The problem of development: nature, moving forces and sources, distinctive features, laws and mechanisms.
Topic 3. General genetic law of cultural development of higher mental functions in the theory of L.S. Vygotsky.
- The general genetic law of cultural development of higher mental functions and it’s psychological essence.
- Variations in understanding the general genetic law of cultural development.
- The role and place of general genetic law in the system of theoretical concepts and principals of cultural-historical theory.
Lectures are mandatory for PhD students of 2nd year of Educational Psychology faculty (as of 2011-2012).
